In April 2013, more than 1,100 people died in the collapse of Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh. Only miles away, Luke Swanson (’10) was researching climate change. Widely regarded as the deadliest disaster in the garment history, the building housed five garment factories whose workers either lost their lives or livelihoods when the shoddily-built building collapsed. Securing online information has become paramount across industries. To address the need for cybersecurity experts, Western first partnered with Whatcom Community College to develop a follow-on bachelor's degree in cybersecurity, and recently approved the 2015-16 budget to include funding for a new cybersecurity program at Olympic and Peninsula colleges.

Lizzi Jackson (’14) threw her hat in the ring for the title of Miss Washington 2015 on July 3 and walked away with a crown. She, as the new state titleholder, will compete for the title of Miss America 2016 beginning Sept. 13.

Harrison Mills (’12, Design) and Clayton Knight (’12, Physics) are the electronic dance music duo ODESZA, a partnership forged during their senior year. The year they graduated, the Washington state natives watched two songs from their debut album, “Summer’s Gone” – “How Did I Get Here” and “iPlayYouListen” – go viral via SoundCloud.

University of Washington microbiologist and Western Washington University 2010 Distinguished Alumnus Peter Greenberg ('70) has won the prestigious 2015 Shaw Prize in life science and medicine and will share a $1 million award evenly with microbiologist Bonnie Bassler, chair of Princeton University's Department of Molecular Biology.
