Travel, and the lack of travel, have been on many minds. Business and personal travel drive a large component of the US and global economy. With the onset of COVID-19, travel plummeted some 90% and has slowly been gaining ground since.

The term travel is complicated. Americans have pivoted to some degree with RVs, camping and other local or regional outdoor activities seeing a spike over the summer. As snow gathers in the hills, that may once again pivot.

The industry is making a massive effort to bring back their customers by showcasing the steps they are taking to help people feel confident in their safety. But will travel ever really be that same or will we see permanent changes like we did in the years following 9/11?

This will be where we start this Western Insights’ topic – Travel in the age of COVID and Post-COVID.

Our panel features two industry experts: Allan Wright, owner and operator of Zephyr United and Jeremy Horn, Director Safety & Security at Alaska Airlines. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Jasmine Goodnow, Associate Professor of Recreation Management and Leadership at Western. Dr. Goodnow’s research focuses on transformational travel and the construction of liminality, and microadventure as a form of sacred, inclusive, and sustainable travel.

Western Insights is an online panel series created in response to COVID-19 to provide the broader region, Western alumni, friends, and students with access to information on current events drawing from the University’s nationally respected experts. This free series is offered entirely online and is open to everyone.
