An Artist Talk with a Notable Alum

Brought to you by the Department of Theatre and Dance and the College of Fine and Performing Arts in partnership with the WWU Alumni Association

Michael Compton graduated from Western in 1993 with a B.A. in Theater Arts. That degree along with the skills and knowledge he gained as a student provided him with the foundation he needed to create his own unique career path in the creative arts.

Over the past 30 years Michael has worked as an actor, recreation leader, concert producer and promoter, marketing manager, event producer for the Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival, executive director for the northwest chapter of the GRAMMY’s and most recently as an independent entrepreneur, musician, producer, performer and recording artist.

He recently dropped his 20th independent release, a solo LP titled ‘Wooden Spoon’ on his label missingrecords.com. The album explores his personal experiences with cancer, grief, loss and the power of art and expression to provide healing during challenging times.

While the specific impact might be difficult to discern, it’s clear the enduring influence of lessons learned at Western and relationships he built during that time have played an important role along every step of his journey.
