Islands Conservation Corps - San Juan Island Events

You are invited to an "open house" of our work this year on the Mt Grant Preserve. Please join us and come to see the exciting things WWU is doing out on the islands with the Island Conservation Corps!

The Islands Conservation Corps is a hybrid field and academic ecological restoration program in the San Juan Islands that serves as a partnership between Western Washington University and the San Juan Islands Conservation District. This certificate combines academic coursework with hands-on fieldwork performing the fundamentals of ecological restoration. Working with regional land management agencies, students proactively address imminent threats to our environment through restoration, conservation, and adaptive management.  

This event will have two components, with the first serving as a walk through of conservation management activities conducted by the ICC crew at Mt Grant Preserve on San Juan Island. The second portion of the event will be a presentation of the growing WWU presence in the islands at San Juan Brewing. This presentation will cover the current and potential expansion of undergraduate, post-bac, and graduate level education in ecology for the Washington Archipelago. 

We'll provide transportation to and from the preserve. 

Getting to San Juan Island

For Locals, Or Drive Your Car onto San Juan Island:

• Use this ferry schedule to plan your trip from the Anacortes Ferry terminal (we highly recommend a reservation for car passengers)

• Take the 11:55 am ferry for the Mt Grant Preserve event, park at the San Juan County Court House Visitors Lot, and ride our free shuttle to the preserve (there is NO parking at Mt Grant; access by shuttle only)For the brewery presentation only, take the 2:40 pm ferry and park at San Juan Brewing 

Or Park at Anacortes Ferry Terminal and Take a Free Shuttle:

• Park at the Anacortes Ferry Terminal Parking and purchase a ticket for Friday Harbor
• You will need to buy a walk-on passenger ticket and get in line to board the ferry at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time  
• For the Mt Grant Preserve event, take the 11:55am ferry
• For the brewery presentation only, take the 2:40pm ferry
• Make sure to allow enough time to park your car and walk to the terminal!

Final Ferries:

• Inter-island travelers will want to take the 5:45 inter-island ferry
• Leave San Juan Brewing at 7:00pm for the 7:45pm ferry to Anacortes; ferry terminal is walking-distance, and we can also provide transportation
